The Geometry in Space Project

Sponsored by the Indiana Space Grants Consortium and Ball State University

The Geometry in Space Project seeks to awaken an interest in middle school, junior high school, and senior high school mathematics and science teachers and students and BSU faculty and students in the mathematics and science of remote sensing, one of NASA's most successful activities.  The keynote speaker for the Geometry in Space Project will be Dr. Steven Saunders of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.  Dr. Saunders is currently Chief Scientist on the Mars Odyssey Mission.  Project curricular materials and technology resources will be disseminated using a variety of strategies, including rebroadcast of the public lecture on Insite (Indiana Academy’s distance learning network), on-campus workshops, presentations in local schools, and publication of a project WWW site and CD-ROM.  Through these follow-up activities, the Geometry in Space Project will assist teachers and students to continue their interest in remote sensing and to apply what they learn in both in-class (e.g., lessons and term projects) and extra-curricular (e.g., science fair projects) educational activities.  In so doing, we hope to promote and instill in our community a heightened sense of the value and timeliness of geometry in today's scientific world.
