Schedule of Events

This fall, the Geometry in Space Project is sponsoring a series of lectures and workshops on the Ball State University campus and in the surrounding community.  Please share the enclosed information with your friends, colleagues, and students and consider attending one or more activities yourself.

Geometry in Space activities begin with two lectures by Dr. Steven Saunders.  In both cases, Dr. Saunders will discuss NASA’s current 2001 Mars Odyssey Mission (http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/odyssey/index.html).  Dr. Saunders is chief scientist for the Solar System Exploration Office at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the project scientist for the 2001 Mars Odyssey mission. He was the project scientist for the Magellan mission to Venus and he has studied the geological processes of the Moon, Venus and Mars extensively. In addition to his planetary research activities, he has been involved in maintaining NASA's planetary data in a form available to the public and for researchers throughout the world, as project scientist for the Planetary Data System and Director of the JPL Regional Planetary Data Facility. He recently stepped down as Director of the Office of Space Science Solar System Exploration Education and Outreach Forum. He is a recipient of the NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 1988 and the NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement medal in 1991. Dr. Saunders’ presentations are scheduled as follows:

·         Tuesday, September 25 at 1:00 pm in the Student Center Ballroom.

Audience: students and faculty from BSU and local middle and high schools.

·         Tuesday, September 25 at 7:00 pm in Cardinal Hall.

Audience: general public.

On Thursday September 27 and Friday September 28, a two-hour computer workshop will be offered on four occasions to groups of up to 20 faculty and/or students.  The purpose of the workshop is to acquaint students and faculty with a set of exploratory investigations and their associated technologies and WWW-based information resources (http://www.cs.bsu.edu/homepages/dathomas/SpaceGrant).  Because seating is limited in the computer laboratory being used, advance registration is required for the workshops.  The workshops are scheduled as follows:

·         Thursday, September 27

o                                9:00 am – 11:00 am

o                                1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

·         Friday, September 28

o                                9:00 am – 11:00 am

o                                1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

During the months of October and November, a limited number of in-school assemblies and workshops will be presented on a first-come basis.  Teachers and/or school administrators interested in arranging a presentation at their school should contact the project directors (see below) as soon as possible.
